- Assure that you have a well-defined escape plan. Make sure that people who are confined to a wheelchair have immediate access to their wheelchair when an emergency occurs. Call the fire department at (909) 447-3540 to make sure the person’s special needs are in the 911 dispatch system.
- Smoke Detectors should be placed outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement. On floors without bedrooms, detectors should be installed in or near living areas such as dens, living rooms, or family rooms.
The four basic steps to draw up an escape plan for your home includes:
- Draw a floor-plan of your home;
- Agree on a meeting place;
- Practice your escape plan; and
- Make your exit drill realistic.
You can also refer to www.survivealive.org for information including how to survive alive, tour the survival house, fire and life safety information, and kids and teachers information.
- You can contact the fire department at (909) 447-3540. Fire Station tours are normally scheduled on the second Tuesday and third Wednesday of each month by appointment only. If you would like a tour on a different day of the week and/or require special accommodations, please contact the fire department with your request.
Yes.
Install extinguishers in plain view.
- Extinguishers should be located in convenient locations throughout the home.
- Place them in areas that contain potential fire hazards such as the kitchen (not too close to the stove), workshop, garage, and basement.
- In each area, place the extinguisher near the door so you can reach it easily, extinguish the fire and ensure a quick, safe escape.
- (909) 625-9427
- To protect your home from wildfires you must create a safety zone or firebreak by reducing the amount of dead or dying fuel (vegetation) around your home. This does not necessarily mean all vegetation should be removed. In fact, having fire-resistant plants and trees around your home that are properly trimmed and well watered can serve as a firebreak.
911 is dedicated to calls for emergency aid, such as a traffic accident, fires or calls for paramedic service, a crime in progress, imminent threat to life, bodily injury, or major property damage or loss.
When Reporting an Emergency:
- Remain calm and speak slowly and clearly while explaining the type of emergency you are reporting.
- The dispatcher will ask you questions concerning the type of emergency you are reporting. The answers you provide will be relayed to the responding emergency personnel.
- The dispatcher will request your name.
- Give your location, if different from the scene of the emergency.
- Stay on the line while the dispatcher processes the call. You may need to provide additional information or to receive instruction from the dispatcher.
- Firefighters are on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Currently, our department works what is called a 3/4 schedule. This means our firefighters work a 24-hour shift and are then off for 24 hours. This rotation continues for three shifts then firefighters have four days off. We have three shifts that rotate through this schedule.
- The fire department serves as the first responders for all medical emergencies. Our two fire stations are strategically located in Montclair so our response times have a positive effect on medical emergencies. In addition to our paramedics, the rest of our fire personnel are certified Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT). The transportation of patients is provided by American Medical Response a private ambulance company that provides transport services to most of San Bernardino County. It is also important to remember that with many medical emergencies extra hands and bodies are necessary to assist with the care and moving of a patient onto a gurney.

Or visit: http://www.caloes.ca.gov/ - 911 calls from cellular phones are answered by California Highway Patrol (CHP) personnel and routed to the proper agency. 911 personnel do not know the location from where you are calling. It is important to know your cell phone number, and be aware of your surroundings so you can tell the dispatcher where you are. Ideally, street names and addresses should be provided. If this is impossible, look for major landmarks. Since most cell phone calls are made from moving vehicles, callers should inform the dispatcher when they change locations.

I own property within the unincorporated area of San Bernardino County adjacent to Montclair. What is the Planning agency that serves my area and how do I contact them?
Planning issues within the City’s sphere of influence are handled by the San Bernardino County Land Use Services Department, located in the County Government Building at 385 N. Arrowhead Avenue, San Bernardino. Land Use Services may be contacted at (909) 387-8311.
My property in the County area is currently served by a private sewer (septic) system. Can I connect to the City sewer system?
City sewer mains are located in a limited number of streets within the unincorporated County area. Property owners on those streets desiring to connect to sewer are required to execute an agreement and pay certain fees.
There are two options for obtaining information about calls for service and statistics for specific areas:
The Police Department's daily log of calls for service for the past 60 days is available for review during normal business hours at 4870 Arrow Highway. Although it does not provide statistical data, it provides an itemized listing of the calls for service, including date, time, location, nature of call for service, and disposition.
Requests for crime statistic searches for specific areas and for specific crimes may be made in writing. Statistics or call for service history for a specific address are not available. The cost for the crime statistic search is $25 per hour. Mail your request with a check or money order for $25 to Montclair Police Department, P.O. Box 2308, Montclair, CA 91763. Please include a contact telephone number, your mailing address where the results should be sent, and the specifics of your requested search (i.e., specific crime(s) of interest, area of interest by street names and hundred blocks, and date range). Should the search require over one hour, you will be notified of the additional cost. The results will be mailed.
To begin a neighborhood watch group, form a small planning committee of neighbors to discuss the needs of your community, gauge the level of interest, and identify potential problems. You will also need to decide on a date and place for an initial neighborhood watch meeting.
If your group is interested in having a member of the Montclair Police Department attend either the first or a subsequent meeting and speak to the group about a particular topic of concern, you can make arrangements for this by calling the Montclair Police Department at (909) 621-4771. What type of fire extinguisher should I purchase for my home and how will I know how to use it properly?
There are two types of fire extinguishers available on the market today. They are either rechargeable or disposable and come in portable sizes. Portable extinguishers (rechargeable or disposable) for home use are not designed to fight large or spreading fires. Even against small fires, they are useful only under certain conditions.
-
The operator must know how to use the extinguisher. There is no time to read directions during an emergency.
-
The extinguisher must be within easy reach, in working order and fully charged.
-
The operator must have a clear escape route that will not be blocked by fire.
-
The extinguisher must match the type of fire being fought. Extinguishers containing water are unsuitable for use on grease or electrical fires.
-
The extinguisher must be large enough to put out the fire. Many portable extinguishers discharge completely in as few as eight to ten seconds.
Choosing your extinguisher:
Select only fire extinguishers that have been tested by an independent laboratory (e.g. Underwriters Laboratories) and labeled for the type and size of fire they can extinguish. Use these labels as a guide to purchase the type of extinguisher that suits your needs. Multipurpose fire extinguishers, labeled ABC, may be used on all three classes of fire. If you use the wrong type of extinguisher, you can endanger yourself and make the fire worse.
Classes of Fires:
Class A: Ordinary combustibles such as wood, cloth and paper.
Class B: Flammable liquids such as gasoline, oil and oil-based paints.
Class C: Energized electrical equipment which includes wiring, fuse boxes, circuit breakers, machinery and appliances.
Extinguisher Sizes:
Portable fire extinguishers are also rated for the size of fire they can handle. This rating will appear on the label (e.g. 2A:10B:C.) The larger the numbers, the larger the fire that the extinguisher can put out, but higher-rated models are often heavier. Make sure you can hold and operate the extinguisher before you purchase it.
Installation and Maintenance:
Fire extinguishers should be installed in plain view, above the reach of children, near an escape route and away from stoves and heating appliances.Fire extinguishers require routine maintenance. Read your operator's manual to learn how to inspect and maintain the extinguisher.
Rechargeable extinguishers must be serviced after every use, while disposable extinguishers can be used only once and must be replaced after use.
Remember the PASS-word:Pull the pin: This unlocks the lever and allows you to discharge the extinguisher.
Aim low: Point the extinguisher nozzle (or hose) at the base of the fire.
Squeeze the lever above the handle: This discharges the extinguishing agent. Releasing the lever will stop the discharge.
Sweep from side to side: Moving carefully toward the fire, keep the extinguisher aimed at the base of the fire and sweep side to side until the flames are extinguished. Watch the fire area. If the fire reignites, repeat the process.
Even if you think you've extinguished the fire, always be sure to call the fire department to inspect the fire site.
-
When responding to a call in the “middle of the night” do the firefighters have to use the sirens even though traffic is minimal?
Yes, the state vehicle code requires that while responding Code-3, an emergency response vehicle must have all emergency lights on and the siren sounding. A Code-3 response is initiated when life, property or the environment is in immediate danger. Some examples are chest pain, difficulty breathing, fire, hazardous materials spill, and auto accidents.- The standard response to a residential structure fire includes 3 engine companies, 1 rescue squad, and 1 Division Chief. If these units are not needed, they are released upon arrival. The main goal of the Montclair Fire Department is to protect lives and property and this level of response is needed to accomplish this goal.
