Divorce Records
Divorce records are generally obtained from and maintained by the Court in which the divorce was filed. It is always best to contact the Court’s office directly. The below information is provided as a courtesy and does not include all of the potential locations for obtaining records of a divorce. If you are seeking records outside of San Bernardino and Los Angeles counties, start with searching for the County Superior Court’s website, or check the “Statewide” heading below.
San Bernardino County
If you are seeking information about a divorce filed with San Bernardino County, please visit the San Bernardino County Court website or call (909) 708-8678.
Los Angeles County
Record information for divorce filings is available at the Los Angeles Superior Court where the divorce was filed. If the Superior Court location is not known, information can be obtained at the County Courthouse by calling at (213) 830-0803 or going to 111 North Hill St., Los Angeles, CA, 90012.
Statewide
The California Department of Public Health maintains divorce records for only 1962 through June 1984. These records consist only of the face sheet of the divorce action – not the actual divorce decree. CDPH is only able to provide a Certificate of Record, which includes the names of the parties, filing date, county, and case number of the divorce. Copies of the actual divorce decree can only be obtained from the Superior Court in the county where the divorce took place. For questions about divorce records held by CDPH or the process for obtaining records call (916) 558-1784.
